Learn How to Earn A Solid Living
Providing Creative Services

Say goodbye to the term "starving artist" and say hello to the hearty creative business that turns a healthy profit.

If you love working on projects using your creative talents, but just haven't figured out how to charge what you are worth, don't despair!  The "business side" of creativity shouldn't cause you to want to give up.

Here's the painful reality:

Most artists and creative people focus on what they do best - being creative - but tend to ignore or set aside the "business side."

Creative talent alone won't bring you great clients or earn you enough money to pay your bills.

99% of creative folks avoid dealing with the business side of their business because they don't like it, they're afraid of it, or they feel guilty for charging money for acting on their creative talents.

All of my creative clients felt this way about contracts, cash flow, and fees when the first got into the business world, and you probably do, too!

I understand what it's like to be in business, and how difficult it can be to deal with the "business side" of a creative business - especially when you don't enjoy sales, marketing, fee setting, proposal writing, or business management and are using the wrong methods to reach your financial goals.

The Straight Truth About Business

Let me be totally straight with you - business ain't easy no matter what you do, but it's even harder in a creative business because you are personally attached to what you do AND because you are usually working to sell something for which there is no concrete "value."

It's not like selling a car, where you can easily determine the worth of the vehicle.  Anyone can go online and know how much a car is worth based on model, age, condition, and a variety of other specific items.  But, when you are selling decorative painting services, planning an event, or staging a house how do you measure the value of your creativity for that project?

Well, I can tell you one thing for sure,
if you are charging by the hour, then you are absolutely, unequivocally hurting yourself and your chances of getting paid what you really deserve.

Why Charging By The Hour is Killing Your Profits

Charging an hourly rate to determine the value of your creative talent is like trying to determine the value of someone's life based on their age.  It's ridiculous!

Would the painting of the Mona Lisa be less valuable if people found out it only took Leonardo da Vinci 60 minutes to complete?  Would the masterpiece be worth more if it took him 60 years?

It shouldn't matter how long it takes you to do what you do, your pricing should lie in the perceived value of the end result.

Perceived value of the end result?  Well, how the heck do you determine that?!?!

Fantastic question!  Thanks for asking.

First of all, value isn't determined by you, or any seller for that matter.  It's determined by the people to which you sell and their perceptions.  You have to learn how to find out what your customers want, why they want it, and how it believe it will affect them once they have it.  There are specific questions and ways to determine this information, regardless of what creative item or service you are selling, and the methods to get the information are really very easy once you know how!  You can learn them in my book created just for creative folks.

What Others Say About Me
and the Information in this Book

Creative professionals such as faux finishers, muralists, interior decorators, writers, event planners, photographers, home stagers, wedding consultants, graphic designers, and fine artists have all used this method of creating proposals, setting prices, and transforming their creative talents into successful businesses.

Just read about their successes for yourself:

I just have to say, how AWESOME your book is! It gave me confidence in discussing budget with a potential client for a website project. My client wasn't being straight with me about her budget, and with the specific examples in your book of how clients might respond to the "budget" question, I was able to work things out to come to an agreed upon fee. This book is an invaluable tool that every creative person in business for themselves should not do without.

Kirstin Carey's book is one of the best resources I have read to help me create a successful pricing and networking campaign for my business. I bought this book right before meeting with a potential client. By simply applying the principles of listening to the client, asking questions and clarifications from the client, and letting the client tell me what her needs were (all of which I learned from Kirstin's book), my client, of her own accord, raised my fee 50%! Her statement was, "When I realized what I was asking you to do, I realized I needed to pay you more." Thank you, Kirstin!

By learning the information in this book, you can also gain the knowledge and confidence to discuss budget and fees with your clients, so you don't undercut yourself or charge too little for your services.  Just look how this client used these skills effectively to get her "biggest job ever...."

I just recently got back from a  job I did up in Cape Cod
worth over $11,000
and it is because I used the techniques I learned from you
to turn a consultation into my biggest job ever.

You too can absolutely get paid what you are worth and have the business you really want - and you don't have to love crunching numbers or reading marketing statistics or charting out your business plan.  You just have to learn some simple concepts and apply them to your creative business.

"I just signed my biggest contract ever – for a Complete Production Wedding!  It’s my most inclusive (and most expensive!) service package and I only have you to thank.  My new attitude, proposal write-up, and fee system reinforced my professional image.  Now, I’m ready to play in the big leagues!  Thank you for helping me earn more money, save my clients stress, and make my work more enjoyable.  There’s nothing better in life than loving what you do
(and getting paid for it!)."

Aren't you interested in getting your biggest contract ever?  You can!  You just have to know what to ask, how to charge, and what to do to get paid what you are worth!

"I
already used your advice regarding fact gathering questions last week
on a prospect and it went really smoothly...
I got the job and it is a relatively big one for me ($3,600)!  Thanks.

When you get business advice, are you frustrated because the information you get just doesn't apply to your creative business?  Do you wish someone would just talk to you, answer your questions, and speak your language?

"My business, Sew Beautiful, provides custom window treatments and soft furnishings to retail clients. I have read your book 'Starving Artist No More' and in the chapter about pricing, it was as if you were speaking 'my language.'

You gave me the confidence to change how I charge for my consultations, charging a fair price for the end result. I recently set an appointment using my new 'value added' consultation fee and the client didn't hesitate for a moment.

It's a great feeling to start fresh with a new prospect, knowing that I can (and will) get paid for my time doing what I love to do!"

The concepts you need to know to increase your creative services income aren't difficult, you just have to learn them and use them.  It really is that simple.

"Your guidance has helped me immensely! You have been there for me 100% - especially in times of great need or sudden emergencies. More importantly your ability to GIVE unconditionally is what makes you stand out in your field.  Let's face it... I have called you in times when I was in a pinch - needing advice in an instant. You have ALWAYS been there guiding me and showing me the way.

Because of you:

I set higher standards for my business.

My negotiating skills improved.

I once feared public speaking...I now speak effortlessly to large groups.

I implemented a national training program - something I was not sure
how to structure on my own.

I realize my value, never compromise my integrity and set boundaries.

If someone asked me in one sentence to describe Kirstin Carey,
I would tell them: 'she's an incredibly smart woman with a ton of talent,
a mind for business and a heart of gold!'"

You Can Achieve Creative Business Success, Too!

Don't you want a business that lets you do what you love and get paid for it?  Imagine being able to do what you love - what you were meant to do - and having an even, continuous cash flow.  You look at your business bank statement and you have enough money to pay all of your bills easily, including enough money to cut yourself a regular, healthy check.

Wow.  Wouldn't that feel great?

It does feel great, and you should know what it feels like.  You deserve to love what you do and get paid for your talent and creativity. It's a gift. You should open it and enjoy it!

Who Am I?

My name is Kirstin Carey and I've been presenting programs and consulting people for over a dozen years helping them do what they enjoy AND make money while doing it!  I understand how difficult business can be, as I own my own business and I'm married to a serial entrepreneur, so I get to live through his business ups and downs, too.

In the beginning of my career, I worked mostly with corporations and companies to help them and their employees market and sell more effectively.  Over the years, I was approached by a photographer, an interior decorator, a graphic designer, and a muralist to help them.  Each person wanted to make more money with their creative services, but was struggling with many of the same business issues.  It was obvious there was a huge void in business education materials specifically designed for creative folks.  So, I set out to create programs and educational support items to fill this gaping need.

Follow the information in my book and you WILL be a successful creative professional.  It's not a question of if, it's a question of when. It just depends on how much you want it.
